Virginia slavery document. This document lists the property of Robert Nuckolls of Grayson County, Virginia as of the first day of April, 1815 which includes seven slaves.

The property listed includes "Seven slaves of the following descriptions - Males 4 between 12 and 50 at 1,600 - Females 2 between 12 and 50 at 500 - 1 under the age of 12 at 200". The total value of slaves was $2,300 which exceeded the value of all other property combined including 190 acres with one dwelling house of logs, barn and meat house valued at $1,000 as well as various parcels of land in the township of Greensville, Virginia.

The inventory begins with a list of seven slaves that Holcomb owned and their value which ranged from $50.00 for Effie to $550.00 for Peter. The remainder of the inventory lists household furniture, ceramics, saddles, silver, glassware, shotgun, a piano forte and so on.

A receipt signed “John Melzard” for taxes paid on his property in his hometown of Marblehead, MA: “Received this 16 day of Augst., 1814 from John Melzard the sum of eight two cents for direct tax upon the property of J.M. in the Town of M.head in the ninth Collection District, in the State of Massachusetts, under the act of Congress passed the 2d August, 1813, to lay and collect a direct tax within the United States.” The document is in good condition, with light toning and tattering at the edges.

Brown which mentions the sea captain John Melzard: “I therefore beg leave to acquaint you that John Melzard appears by the List that accompanied him from the Sandwich … a volunteer entered at Gravesend on the 2nd of May 1796 and received an able seaman’s bounty, and farther beg leave to inform that he has run from the Kite two months pass.”
