Bond dated May 24 1751 for a loan for £100, which Mateÿs Piterson (Mathias Peterson), William Piterson (Peterson) and John Piterson (Peterson) of Freehold, New Jersey, yeomen (farmers) had borrowed from Charles Crooke, a baker, of New York City, with 50% of the loan, payable at 6% interest, in money of the Province of New York on May 7 1752. The document is signed by Mathias, William and John Peterson, with their wax seals adjacent, at the lower right, and is witnessed by Aevis V D Bilt (Avis Vanderbilt) and Peter Van Deventer at lower left. On the verso are five endorsements, given by Charles Crooke, and one executed by John Crooke, Charles' son, after his death, acknowledging receipt of interest dated 1764.

This appears to be a list of nine pirates executed on Leith Sands, Edinburgh, Scotland in January 1721. John Clerk was the pirate known as "Lord" John Clerk.

George W. Hutchinson, Kanawha, Virginia 1843

Deposition of George W. Hutchinson, with note attached, dated Kanawha, Virginia Sep 23 1843, regarding the hiring of a slave boy in Virginia, that had ended in dispute; addressed to Clerk of District Court for Iowa Territory, Muscatine City, Bloomington, with faint Cincinnati, Ohio, (date unclear) postmark.

Seems sometime in the months of either Jan or Feb 1842, Hutchinson was in Kanawha, Virginia (now West Virginia), and was present when Benjamin Bowman hired, "a certain Negro boy named Squire," who previously been employed by Charles G. Reynolds. Hutchinson said that he had heard Reynolds tell Bowman that he would not hire the boy, "remarking that he would not give his victuals & clothes for him, he being so frequently laid up and unable to work ..." Hutchinson had done business with Reynolds during 1842, "and knew the service rendered generally by said boy, as well as in 1841 and 1842, and knew he was unable to render service on half of the time ..." The statement is signed by George W. Hutchinson. Following Hutchinson's deposition is one signed by Lyman Evans, who stated that Squire had been employed "occasionally at easy work on the farm and hauling provisions and the like, frequently laid up and unable to work. Said boy was clothed and boarded by ... Reynolds ..." At the Kanawha court hearing, Reynolds asked Lyman Evans, "What would you consider the reasonable value of the services of Squire in the year 1842, over his board & clothes?" To which Reynolds replied, "I should have estimated his board and clothes a full equivalent for the services rendered by him ..." Attached to the deposition is a forwarding note reading, "Mr. Amos Barnett. Take notice on the 23d day of Sep 1843, at the store of Lewis Ruffner in the County of Kanawha Va, I shall take the deposition of George W. Hutchinson and others to be read as evidence on ... a suit ... in the District Court of Iowa Territory and for the County of Muscatine, in which you are plaintiff and I am defendant, when & where you may attend, if you please ... [signed] Charles G. Reynolds.

“A true copy” dated October 9th, 1792 of the last will and testament of Joseph Garret of Goshen in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Garret’s were a prominent Quaker family and one of first settlers of the area. Joseph Garrett died January 10th 1792. Signed and sealed by George Worrall.

Mr R.C. McConnell 1837

2 documents dated 1837 concerning the settling of a Southern estate of Mr R.C. McConnell. One document is an accounting of the property of the estate holdings which were left to the widow Sarah McConnell. The second document is a letter about the estate outlining what was left to a daughter, Mrs Mary McConnell Howe. The handwriting is difficult to read but Mr. McConnell was either from South Carolina or Georgia. Both documents refer to slaves in the estate: the estate account states Mr McConnell owned 50 slaves and the letter lists 10 slaves by name, with values for each, which were left to the daughter Mary and her husband George Howe.

Letter home to Mark Safford, Washington, New Hampshire, from a couple, Mary and S[amuel] Daniels, at Detroit, enroute on a trip to Jacksonville, Illinois. October 3, 1837, 3pp. with integral stampless cover. The blue circle date stamp is partially faint.
Content in brief: Pleasant journey; beautiful fruit in York state; "I have seen a great many curiousitys"; Niagara Falls "it well payed the way for going there"; dislikes Canada -- "there are so many different kinds of people"; muddy roads; thirteen teams of people on steamboat going to Michigan or Illinois; Detroit-- "does not look like the cobble hills of New Hampshire...every thing in the field are as fresh as they are there in June. The people here in the Citty have to pay twenty five cents pe[r] load to get the Farmers to carry the manure out of their yards, this is a fair specimen of the richness of this country...". S. Daniels also mentions that the East is old and in decay.

Westmoreland County [Virginia] manuscript slave document, Division of the slaves from the George Bruce estate between his daughters. Cordelia [wife of William H Peyton] is to receive the Negroes in Lot No 1: Big [?], Jenny & her child, Winney, Mary, Maria [?] & James - valued at $875; and Parmilia to receive those in Lot No 2: Joe, Mary, Richard, etc. - valued at $865. Some of the slave names are hard to decipher, but there appears to be about a dozen total.
Signed at bottom, January 7, 1825 by "Danl Carmichael"; "Law Washington"; and "Fras C Triplett."

Very interesting letter dated Greenfield Academy (Lancaster, Highland County, Ohio), May 25 1843, from M. C. Whitehurst, a student, to Dr. F. O. Foster, Circleville OH, with Lancaster/ O, Jun 1 (1843) postmark.

The letter reads, in part, as follows, "Study seems to get much easier than it did and time moves off considerably faster than it has done heretofore. though not as pleasant yet as I should desire it, owning to my having taken up so many studies at the commencement that it leaves me no time for other reading. I hope, however, to get through with several of them soon. I begin to think it one of the first places in the State to get instruction (for several reasons), first on account of its cheapness; secondly; the manner in which it is conducted. Thirdly; owing to its being situated in the country where there is nothing to lead the mind away from study, and the kind of students that attend a country place are (with but few exceptions) of the right kind. They are either persons that are educating themselves or old farmer's sons that have been brought up in the way they should go, and the teacher is one of the best educated men in the State, can teach anything, takes great pains to teach all that are about him good morals. Is a regular read physician & attends to all his students that get sick. There was but one Society when I first came here, but finding it too large, there was a committee appointed to divide it. It is now Society No. 1 & Society No. 2. Ther is no library connected with either. We have some very good speakers in Society No. 1 and the debates are kept up with considerable interest. No one can doubt but that it is far superior to anything found in Athens. I wish you could be in the school on Thursday afternoon & hear the eloquence there displayed. I say on Thursday afternoon, because this half day is devoted to reading, composition & declaiming. One half the school has got to read compositions, while the other half speaks. It would do you good, I would describe it to you, but it is altogether indescribable, Cicero & Demosthenes are no comparison. There are some twelve or fifteen studying Latin, a very large class in Philosophy, several studying Botany, a large class in Surveying, a large class in Geometry & a large class in Algebra, and you may rest assure it keeps the old man moving to get 'round in a day, but there appears to be no tire out to him. He visits the rooms at night to see if all is going on right. Without joking this is a very pleasant place in the summer. The beautiful wild flowers afford considerable amusement to the fanciful. The tall oaks of the forest clothed in their robes of green present a beautiful view. The large field, too, that promise such an abundant harvest, presents its loveliness to the view. Could you but take a walk with me over the beautiful fields or through the wild woods of the forest in the morning before the Sun makes his appearance, you should not only see nature in all its simplicity & loveliness but feel a good effect of such a walk. Religious instruction is tolerably good here. During the summer we have preaching once every Sabbath, though not as good as I would desire it half the time. The other half we are favored with a sermon from Revd. Mr. Fox of Lancaster, who I presume you have heard [is] a very excellent preacher. We have also raised a Sabbath School, which will be of no small benefit to the children of this region (but rather a barren place in the winter season) ... You may let anybody read this that you please, but Mr. Atwater. Please do not let it be exposed to his sarcastic remarks, but please give him my respects ... [signed] M. C. Whitehurst."

125 Handwritten Letters and Documents Forsyth Willett Bruen

Most of these paper items have to do with the Forsythe, Craig and Bruen families of Newport Rhode Island. There are about 125 pieces in the lot and they dates from the 1860’s into the early 1900’s. Most of the ephemera has to do with Russell Forsyth. Then a good share of the ephemera also has to do with Russell’s sister, Emily Howe Forsyth Bruen. Out of the 125 pieces there are 50 letters, mostly handwritten and most are of the personal nature, 25 receipts, 23 deeds or legal papers, 2 wills (Russell’s and Emily’s) and 26 miscellaneous pieces.

Rochester New York, 1768

Deed on vellum dated 1768 during the reign of King George III. The indenture conveys parcels of property, parts of the Letters Patent, originally given by Queen Anne in 1703, in Rochester New York. The deed refers to the original letters patent and further conveyances as well dating 1721, 1728, and 1736 giving metes and bounds and geographic descriptions of the conveyance with several references to the Depuy family. The property conveyed appears to be tracts 138-143of the Patent.
The deed names Andries Dewitt, Jacobus van Wagener, Elias Depuy, and Jacob Hoornbeek, among others. There are three red wax seals at the bottom of the deed with signatures and Elias Depuy signs as well with no seal.

Lawrence County, Alabama, 1837

Court documents from Moulton, Lawrence County, Alabama, 1837, regarding a dispute between Gilford Gibson and Thomas G. Dobbins in the amount of $800.00. First document is a Sherrif's Summons , " . . . you are commanded to take the body of Thomas G. Dobbins wherever he may be found . . . to holden for said County, at the Courthouse in the town of Moulton . . . ". The charge is then detailed; for Dobbins to satisfy a plea of debt against him for $800.oo by Gilford Gibson. Bottom half records the date of the court appearance and the signature of the Court Clerk, Wiley Gallaway. The back of this document is all manuscript summarizing the charge. There is also the signature of the sheriff here and dates written. It includes another notation by the Court Clerk as to which pages in the Court's book he has entered the case.

Second document is a manuscript declaration by Gilford Gibson through his attorney and is headed , "The State of Alabama, Lawrence County, County Court, July Term, 1837. This document is 18 lines in length and recounts the defendant's promise to pay the $800.oo debt as well as his repeated failure to do so. The document then asks for damages due the plantiff in the amount of $1,500.oo. It also spells out the time frame that the debt must be settled in. Bottom signature reads, L.B. Cooper and an abbreviation of P.O. or P.Q. - I am not sure if this is the attorney for the case or someone else.

Newcastle Upon Tyne 1784

Attorney archive of a case involving the bankruptcy proceedings against William Milbourn of Newcastle Upon Tyne, a Plumber and Dealer, dated 1784.
The archive which is tied together at top is filled with memorandums, deposition notices, bond, and London Gazette with advertisement of bankruptcy. Overall 40 leaves consissting of numerous documents with many signatures. Most of the deposition notices take place at the home of "Mr William Loftus known by the sign of the White Hart".
Also a related vellum deed dated 1784, nicely penned of His Majesty's Bankrutcy Commissioners of Newcastle Upon Tyne, William Wislon , Ralph Heron , and Lancelot Heron, next to their red wax seals.

Private John A. Welch 1863

Civil War printed document. This document is dated Headquarters Department Of The Ohio Cincinnati, Ohio, November 4, 1863. The document says it is a General Orders No. 177. This document appears to deal with a person charged with desertion. It looks like it says Private John Welch of the 1st Regiment Ohio Heavy Artillery is charged with desertion and found guilty. In one area it says, "And does, therefore sentence him, the said Private John A. Welch, of Company E, 1st Regiment Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery, 'To be shot to death, at such time and place as the General commanding the Department may direct,' more than two-thirds of the members of the Court concurring." It then says the finding is approved and the commanding officer of the 1st Ohio Regiment will see that the sentence is duly executed in the vicinity of Covington, Kentucky.

Document billing for services in jailing of a slave. Jailor H.W. Reid charges Aaron Dutton for "Receiving negro man Limus July 16, 1840 in Jail", feeding him for nine days and then releasing him. No place mentioned but this document came with a collection of other slave papers from Alabama.

1817 MASSACHUSETTS SHIP PALLADIUM INSURANCE POLICY DOCUMENT

Part-printed document, signed, "Robt Rantoul", President of the Beverly Marine Insurance Company, Dec. 1, 1817, Beverly, Massachusetts. Also signed by Isaac Flagg, Secty. The policy was made out to Henry Larcom, $1,000 for specie or effects on board the Ship Palladium, on a voyage from Beverly to Calcutta, India and return. The text refers to perils by pirates, men of war, assailing thieves, etc.

A document concerning a bridge: “The undersigned has examined Mr. Henry R. Campbell’s bill for constructing Connecticut River Bridge, and believes the following deductions should be made from it for the reasons herein assigned considering the terms, conditions and execution of the work. The original estimate for abutments was 3000 perches. Mr. Campbell greatly increased the thickness and depth of the abutments. He claims 5648 perches: the additional amount of 2648 perches was mostly common rubble masonry placed under ground and worth not exceeding $3.75 per perch, making a difference of $5,958.00. It was originally designed to have three pieces estimated to contain 1600 perches, to be eight feet thick …and the inside stone to break horizontal joints instead of which but two piers were built…The piers as constructed contained but little more than 2/3 the amount of face work that was originally designed, and more than one third more of backing stone or rubble work…The contractor was to prepare the foundation in complete order for the masonry for $3,000.00 therefore the extra charge of $784.80 for timber foundations should be deducted…The timber used in the superstructure was according to the original design, except that 36 additional braces not required for strength were put in contrary to directions. The whole amount of iron used in the superstructure is believed to be less than the original design…None of the masonry work was done in so thorough a manner as was called for by the specifications – a considerable amount should be deducted from the contract price…”.

County on the other part witnesseth, that the said Ginne Griffing has on this day put her son Henry on apprentice to the said Jonathan Scranton to labor for him the said Jonathan at husbandry business for the term of five years, ten months, ten days which term will end on the 7th day of March AD 1821 when this Henry will arrive to the age of twenty-one years during all which time the Ginne Griffing promises that the said Henry shall faithfully serve his Master and his lawful command, obey and shall not absent himself from his said Master's service without his leave. And the said Jonathan on his part covenants and agrees to instruct the (?) Apprentice in good husbandry so far as his capacity will permit of, and three months in each of the two first years of his Apprenticeship he will send him to school and do all in his power during his time of schooling to have him taught to read and write, and that he will at other times cause him to be instructed at home as to reading. And that during (?) term he will feed, clothe, wash for and lodge the (?) Henry that he may at all times be comfortable in his business and be enabled to appear decently on Holy days, and that at the expiration of (?) term the said Jonathan will dismiss him from his service and give him one hundred twenty-five dollars in cash, and two suits of clothes for all parts of his life, one suitable for working days, the other for Holy days; and that during the whole term of this indenture, he will treat the (?) apprentice with (?), and will counsel and advise him as occasions may require. Lillie Holliday of Topeka, Kansas

Diary written in 1876 by Lillie Holliday of Topeka, Kansas is up for sale on Ebay Item number: 220422605105. The diary is completely filled with entries for each day of the year. It was written when Lillie was 21-years old. Also included are letters from later in Lillie’s life, many written by leading citizens of Topeka. Along with the diary are several letters and mementos that Lillie kept until her death. Some were very moving letters of condolence for the loss of her husband, mortally injured in a train accident in 1896 at the age of 44.

Document dated June 8, 1797 transfering property in Providence, Rhode Island, from Silas Covell and his wife Rebeckah of Troy, New York to Squire Thurber of Providence. The property in question located in area of Constitution and Benefit Streets, near what is today Brown University. Document contains the two wax seals of John and Elizabeth Wainwright as well as various notes that appear to have been added later on.

Four-page manuscript document appointing Dame Harriott Bloomfield Keeper of the New Park, Hampton Court Dated 18th April, 1821 Signed by three different signatories, one legible as "Lowther" The beginning of the text reads as follows;"His Majesty's Grant unto Dame Harriott Bloomfield, the Wife of the Right Honorable Sir Benjamin Bloomfield, of the offices and Places of Keeper and Paler of the House Park of Hampton Court, and of Mower of the Brakes there, and of the Herbage and Pannage of the said Park with the wood called Browsings, windfall wood, and dead wood, happening in the said Park and of all the Barns, Stables, Outhouse, Gardens...and all the meadows, orchards, closes and Pastures together with all fees, profits [and advantages]" the document goes on to list the amounts she would be paid for the various duties; four pages, folded, with a blind-stamped tax or duty stamp on the first page.

Rental Of Slaves 1827

Document providing for the hiring or rental of slaves. Dated November 6, 1827, Jonathan Rhea promises to pay John Sabine one hundred dollars "for the hire of a Negro woman named Treasy and three children named Henrietta, Charles and Henry for two years". Endorsements on reverse indicate that John Sabine used this promissory note as a form of currency to pay debts to others. No place mentioned but this document came with a collection of other slave papers from Alabama.

Document dated August 26, 1784 transferring property in Providence, Rhode Island, from Samuel Thurber to Simon Covell. The property in question located in area of what is today near Brown University. Signed by Samuel Thurber and his wife Welthy, witnessed by Sarah Balch and Nathaniel Wheaton. Attestation signed again by Wheaton as Justice of the Peace, and J. Theodore Foster as Town Clerk.

Court document stating that an Ann Glaspea was convicted of uttering a profane curse and given a fine. This is a court document from probably the 1700's. We the subscribers in pursuance of the power in us vested by the Orphans Court of Cecil County to value and allot the negros belonging to the estate of William Boulden deceased amongst the heirs of the said dec'd. And after qualifying according to Law do hereby certify that we have Estimated the values of said negros and allotted the same among the heirs of the said deceased in the following manner. Which is to say To Richard Boulden we allot one negro boy named Henry valued at $ 275.00. To Samuel R. Hogg and Rachel his wife one of the heirs of said deceased we allot one negro boy named Lawry valued at $ 275.00. To George Boulden we allot one negro boy named March valued at $225.00. And to Elizer Boulden we allot one negro girl named Ann valued at $ 150.00. We also have considered the other duties enjoined by the said appointment which is to estimate and value the hire of said negros from 1826 up to 1832 and after deducting clothing and board of the younger negros we think that $60.00 is an ample compensation for the hire of said negros for the time before stated. In witness whereof we have annexed our said appointments and the oath by us taken this 9th day of February 1835.

Harry Boyd Declared Insane

5 page 1882 document. Harry Boyd, a 51 year old insurance agent, is declared insane and "unfit to be at large" and is sentenced to the State Insane Asylum. Signed by Multnomah County Judge L. B. Stearns and two examining physicians. Details of the case are given. Boyd is "rational at times." Supposed cause of the disease is "alcoholism." He has been in the insane asylum for a week already, and is now being legally committed.

Stolen Watermelon In North Carolina

This is a North Carolina Judge's ruling on a case of a stolen watermelon from a farm in 1873. It is the State vs. Nathan Bootie. It says a warrant was issued by the Constable, T. L. Bowden on July 23 , 1873. A witness for the State was Thomas Erwin. He claims that Nathan Bootie did take or steal the watermelon from his farm on July 19th 1873, and said melon was on the vine that he planted on the ash bank. Ellen Erwin, swore she saw it cut off the vine with a knife. The Defendant admitted cutting the vines under orders from Mr. Erwin, the farm owner because the vines were growing into the cotton. The Judge, finds the Defendant gulty and fines him $2.00.
