City of Manchester for four dollars and eight cents paid by Harriet Kelsey does sell one lot of land in the public burial ground known as, "The Valley." Near the bottom it is dated September 9, 1853. On the side panel there is a date of April 30, 1864.

"This Indenture, made on the 24th day of April 1815 by Ginne Griffing of Branford in the County of New Haven on the one part and Jonathan Scranton of Guilford in (?) County on the other part witnesseth, that the said Ginne Griffing has on this day put her son Henry on apprentice to the said Jonathan Scranton to labor for him the said Jonathan at husbandry business for the term of five years, ten months, ten days which term will end on the 7th day of March AD 1821 when this Henry will arrive to the age of twenty-one years during all which time the Ginne Griffing promises that the said Henry shall faithfully serve his Master and his lawful command, obey and shall not absent himself from his said Master's service without his leave. And the said Jonathan on his part covenants and agrees to instruct the (?) Apprentice in good husbandry so far as his capacity will permit of, and three months in each of the two first years of his Apprenticeship he will send him to school and do all in his power during his time of schooling to have him taught to read and write, and that he will at other times cause him to be instructed at home as to reading. And that during (?) term he will feed, clothe, wash for and lodge the (?) Henry that he may at all times be comfortable in his business and be enabled to appear decently on Holy days, and that at the expiration of (?) term the said Jonathan will dismiss him from his service and give him one hundred twenty-five dollars in cash, and two suits of clothes for all parts of his life, one suitable for working days, the other for Holy days; and that during the whole term of this indenture, he will treat the (?) apprentice with (?), and will counsel and advise him as occasions may require. Diary written in 1876 by Lillie Holliday of Topeka, Kansas is up for sale on Ebay Item number: 220422605105. The diary is completely filled with entries for each day of the year. It was written when Lillie was 21-years old. Also included are letters from later in Lillie’s life, many written by leading citizens of Topeka. Along with the diary are several letters and mementos that Lillie kept until her death. Some were very moving letters of condolence for the loss of her husband, mortally injured in a train accident in 1896 at the age of 44.

Four-page manuscript document appointing Dame Harriott Bloomfield Keeper of the New Park, Hampton Court Dated 18th April, 1821 Signed by three different signatories, one legible as "Lowther" The beginning of the text reads as follows;"His Majesty's Grant unto Dame Harriott Bloomfield, the Wife of the Right Honorable Sir Benjamin Bloomfield, of the offices and Places of Keeper and Paler of the House Park of Hampton Court, and of Mower of the Brakes there, and of the Herbage and Pannage of the said Park with the wood called Browsings, windfall wood, and dead wood, happening in the said Park and of all the Barns, Stables, Outhouse, Gardens...and all the meadows, orchards, closes and Pastures together with all fees, profits [and advantages]" the document goes on to list the amounts she would be paid for the various duties; four pages, folded, with a blind-stamped tax or duty stamp on the first page.

Rental Of Slaves 1827

Document providing for the hiring or rental of slaves. Dated November 6, 1827, Jonathan Rhea promises to pay John Sabine one hundred dollars "for the hire of a Negro woman named Treasy and three children named Henrietta, Charles and Henry for two years". Endorsements on reverse indicate that John Sabine used this promissory note as a form of currency to pay debts to others. No place mentioned but this document came with a collection of other slave papers from Alabama.

Which is to say To Richard Boulden we allot one negro boy named Henry valued at $ 275.00. To Samuel R. Harry Boyd Declared Insane

5 page 1882 document. Harry Boyd, a 51 year old insurance agent, is declared insane and "unfit to be at large" and is sentenced to the State Insane Asylum. Signed by Multnomah County Judge L. B. Stearns and two examining physicians. Details of the case are given. Boyd is "rational at times." Supposed cause of the disease is "alcoholism." He has been in the insane asylum for a week already, and is now being legally committed.

Stolen Watermelon In North Carolina

This is a North Carolina Judge's ruling on a case of a stolen watermelon from a farm in 1873. It is the State vs. Nathan Bootie. It says a warrant was issued by the Constable, T. L. Bowden on July 23 , 1873. A witness for the State was Thomas Erwin. He claims that Nathan Bootie did take or steal the watermelon from his farm on July 19th 1873, and said melon was on the vine that he planted on the ash bank. Ellen Erwin, swore she saw it cut off the vine with a knife. The Defendant admitted cutting the vines under orders from Mr. Erwin, the farm owner because the vines were growing into the cotton. The Judge, finds the Defendant gulty and fines him $2.00.

James Wortham 1826, Slavery Document from Granville County, North Carolina being a Bill of Sale / Transfer for one “negro girl named Netty about five years old” from a father to a son. This Slave Sale document appears to be written in the hand of James Wortham, one of the witnesses to the Document. The document reads “Know all men by these presents that I Edward Wortham of the County of Granville and State of North Carolina for the love and affection which I bear unto my son Thomas P. Wortham and for the further consideration of one cent to me in hand paid the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged. That I do give unto him the said Thomas P. Wortham one negro girl named Netty about five years old to him and his heirs forever, against the claim or claims of all persons whatsoever and I do bind myself my heirs and warrant and forever defend unto the said Thomas P. Wortham all the rights title and interest of the said negro girl Netty to him and his heirs forever. In testimony of which I have here unto set my hand and seal this the eleventh day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty six”. He is supposedly credited with coming up with the name "United States of America."

The text reads, in part: "I, Sargent Heath of Newtown in the County of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire ... for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and twenty dollars ... well and truly paid by Walter Bailey of West Newbury in the County of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts .... do hereby acknowledge, have given, granted, bargained, and sold ... unto the said Walter Bailey ... [a] certain piece of land situated in Newtown, State and County aforesaid and bounded as follows viz. beginning at a stake and stones on land of Capt. Joub Peaslee's, thence on said Peaslee's and North about thirty three and a half degrees East fifty nine rods and thirteen links to a stake and stone, thence on land of Samuel Carr South forty seven degrees east sixteen rods and fifteen links to a stake and stone, thence on land of the said Sargent Heath South thirty three and a half degrees West fifty seven rods to a stake and stone, thence on land of Benjamin Chase's heirs North fifty four degres West sixteen and a half rods to the bound first mentioned, containing six acres of land by measure...."

Judith Winsor Smith

A great Correspondence Archive (1844-1853) of Judith Winsor Smith is up for sale on Ebay.

Judith Winsor Smith (1821-1921) - An American abolitionist and woman's suffragist, born in Marshfield, MA. During her long lifetime, Smith was involved in many social and politicial causes. She was a member of the Standing Committee of Theodore Parker's 28th Congregational Society; a founder and first president of the Home club of East Boston (women's club) and an officer in state and national women's suffrage associations. Daughter Zilpha Drew Smith (1852-1926) became a prominent Boston social worker.

Handwritten archive of (32) personal letters from Smith, the majority while she living in Pembroke, Massachusetts, 1850-53 and sent to her husband, Silvanus Smith, a shipbuilder in East Boston, but a few earlier 1844-45. Plus (4) from other correspondents, including Silvanue. See below. (36) letters total.

Although the letters are mainly domestic in nature, Judith W. Smith commented in 1920 when she voted for the first time, "For 70 years I have been in the fight for woman suffrage...", and the candid letter content contain possible seeds of her discontent. Silvanus apparently bought their farm in Pembroke without her consent and left her isolated there with small children - overflowing cistern, scarlet fever, crops and livestock - while he went to work in East Boston as a shipbuilder. She comments frequently that she wishes she was in East Boston and regrets a few times that she can't join him to hear Theodore Parker. She also asks him to bring her one of Horace Mann's speeches.

Brief excerpts:

June 9, 1850 - "Martin Ford Jr. has a child two years old sick with the small pox. Dr. C attends him and he is going well. I don't know as I ought to wait till Dr. Wilde come had I? I mean about inoculating the children. Did yours take and is there much of it in South Boston?; My will is good to do a great deal more than I do but I suppose I ought to be content with all I can do. I feel impatient with myself often."

May 22, 1852 - "I like Capt. Manter's plan of bringing his wife here. I think it is much better than to buy the farm without even asking her how she should like it - as I once knew a certain man to do."

June 13, 1852 - "Seth and his two apprentices begun on the barn Friday. Thomas is coming tomorrow. They eat dinner here so your Judy feels as though she was helping you a little. I have felt better the last week than I have before since Zilpha was born - have taken an egg every day and am in hopes to get strong again some time. My last upper tooth broke off on day...and I pulled out the remaining false one - so I look worse than ever.

November 7, 1852 - "I thank you kindly for your very kind letter...Not that I doubt your good feeling at all - I know you have them - but we women are such queer creatures that we need sympathising words and when you say or write any, it does me lots of good."

December 5, 1852 - "I think as you do about Parker and wish I could hear him preach often. I think it would help me but how differently people think of the same thing. Dr. Wilde called here on his way to and from H for Kate. I asked him if he had read Parkers sermon on D W [Daniel Webster]. Part of it he said - and I questioned him about it till he said he thought the sermon unjust and hipocritical...that his (Parkers) malignity was equal to Horace Mann's.

1859 Charlotte County, Florida

1859 Charlotte County, Florida documents detailing the results of a Coroner's Inquest into the death of “a negro woman slave Nancy” the property of William H. Gaines at the time of her death.

It appears that the body of "Nancy" was discovered on Saturday April 9th, 1859 on the side of a public road by a free man of color named Washington Bird. On Monday April 11th, 1859 a Coroner's Inquest was held "on the land of Mrs. Susan Elliott (who owned the property near where the body was found). The first Document is the official findings of the Inquest which is signed by the County Coroner, Thomas Pugh, and each of the 12 jurors. This document reads in part: "An inquisition taken on the land of Mrs. Susan Elliott in the County of Charlotte on the 11th day of April in the year 1859 before Thomas Pugh a Coroner of the County upon the view of the body of the negro woman slave Nancy the property of Wm. H. Gains, then lying dead. The jurors sworn to inquire when, how and by what means the said negro woman slave Nancy came to her death, upon their oaths do say: That on examination of the body there were no marks of violence, that on a surgical examination of the body the heart was considerably diseased, therefore the jurors come to the conclusion that the woman died a natural death caused by over exertion in walking acting on a diseased heart, they are of the opinion that she died on Saturday night last on the side of the public road near the residence of Mrs. Susan Elliott at the place where she was found...". This Document is signed by the Coroner and the 12 jurors and is docketed on the reverse "Inquisition on the body / Nancy a Slave" / "Filed 23 April 1859".
Of special interest is a second ancillary Document related to the Inquest which contains the evidentiary statements of a male negro slave named "Thompson", a free man of Color named Washington Bird and the physician who did the autopsy on the body of Nancy. While the Doctor has written signed his statement in his own hand, the statements of the two negro witnesses are written in the same hand as the previous Document and signed by the witnesses with "their mark" - in each case a simple "X". The negro slave Thompson testifies to the fact that on Saturday evening he spoke with Nancy who told him she was going to Mr. Daniels' to collect some money that one of Mr. Daniels' men owed Mr. Gains, her master. Thompson testifies that Nancy left between 8 and 10 PM on Saturday night to go to Mr. Daniels'. Washington Bird, a free man of Color found the body of Nancy on the side of the road at about 3AM on Sunday morning. He testifies that he was passing along the public road near the plantation of Mrs. Susan Elliott and discovered a negro woman lying dead near the roadside. He states that he continued on his way to the residence of Mr. Hannah where he informed Mr. Hannah that he had "seen a woman dead on the road side and informed him of the place. He saw no one about the place where the woman lay. He did not touch her.". Dr. Ferguson testifies to the condition of the body and the extent of the heart disease.

1813 Frederick County, Maryland Manuscript Legal Brief Documents in a court case involving the death of a male Negro Slave named Harry for sale on Ebay Item number: 280261275456.

These rare, Slavery related legal documents from Frederick Co., Maryland are variously dated between February and June of 1813. They are a portion of the record a fascinating slavery case in which Roger B. Taney served as attorney for the defendants. The case involved the purchase of a slave who, unknown to the purchaser, was in poor health and died of consumption shortly after the purchase was completed. The slave, named Harry, was sold by George French (who were represented by Roger Taney) to Peter Brengle, who testifies that on the first day after the purchase he observed “(Harry) to be weak and sick (and) asked him what ailed, Harry answered that he was weak and had a pain in the breast...had been so for a year or two...”. A doctor's deposition (included here) states that he was called by Brengle “to visit his negro who they called Harry...and found his case desperate, (telling Brengle) you will lose Harry in a few days as he is in the last stage of a deep consumption of the Lungs and cannot survive many days“. Another witness testified that in a tavern conversation with George French (after the sale of Harry) French said Brengle would have to pay for (Harry), though the negro never was worth a damn, and during the lifetime of Mr. Scott, his old master, he was constantly Sick or complaining of a sore throat head ach, and pain in his neck.”. The 2 Documents present include the include the original Appointment of one Ezra Mantz to obtain depositions in the case of Brengle vs French and to deliver those depositions to the Frederick County Court. It is this Document that identifies Roger Taney (the future Chief Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court) as attorney for George French. The second document consists of 4 pages written by Ezra Mantz relating the information taken as depositions from various witnesses produced by the plaintiff and the defendant.

Lawrence County Alabama Slave Valuation 1856

This document from Alabama, Lawrence County Alabama is dated the 22nd of December, 1856. The document is addressed to and signed by C. McDonald, judge of probate, dividing a group of slaves between a father and son, Tomas J. Tweedy and Jos. M. Tweedy. Witnessed and signed by Lewis Dunlop, justice of the peace and three commissioners, Thos Ashford, Jas N. Crow, and Frs. W. Sykes who were chosen “to value & divide certain negros”. Contains the names, value and ages of seven slaves, the oldest, Nancy, 60 years old, valued at $300, and the youngest, Robert, a 6 month old child is valued together with his 23 year old mother Lizzy at $1,225. Another six month old boy, James and his 35 year old mother, Louisa, are valued at $1,025.

Has a number of signatures: Daniel Snider w/ seal [2x]; Daniel Hoffman w/ seal [2x]; John Ludwig; Rachel Ludwig; Jacob Walborn. Plus, three hard to decipher (appear to be Germanic names.)

1793 Benjamin Mumford & James Gregory

1793 Benjamin Mumford & James Gregory both of Exeter, Weavers enterer the workshop of Samuel Hopkinson and and Made an Assault... "did then and there beat wound and abuse & other enormities...against the Peace." Hopkinson "prays they may be apprehended"

The second half of the document is a summons to the Sheriff to apprehend Mumford & Gregory "to be dealt with." Summons notes by the Constable he had "taken the bodys (sic)." Also Summoned Joseph Flood, Joseph Safford, Richard York Jun., And Hezekiah Smith.

Third page is a detail of the Court proceeding and notes the two Justices
found them Guilty. They were ordered to pay a fine of Six Shillings "and committed till this sentence be performed." Signed by Samuel Hopkinson, William Parker Samuel Brooks & Shackford Bennett.

Massachusetts Civil War Document William Scott

Civil War document at the top it says, "Certificate To Be Given To Volunteers At The Time Of Their Discharge To Enable Them To Receive Their Pay,&c." Right below it says William Scott of the 21st Regiment of the State of Massachusetts born in Worcester, 18 years old, 5 feet 11 inches with blue eyes, brown hair, by occupation a carpenter is entitled to a discharge. At the bottom it is dated April 25, 1862, by Command of Gen Wadsworth.

You can get with your kind. Yes Carry Williams is at Los Vegas, New Mexico running a barber shop making $80 a month clear of expenses but as you say he won’t stick very long…..Well Milt it looks like we was going to have a railroad. They commenced the survey from Marshall running to this point this morning so you can just look out for Miami is just going to be the boss town in the country. The road will run from Sedalia to Laclede and a new road will start from this point running to Kansas City through the plains by Malta Bend. I will let you know when I hear the cars whistle. You hold your breath until I let you know. Just closed up the saloon. A mob of about 50 or 75 men went down there and played hell with it. Some parties are trying to get their backs up about it. They gave the saloon keepers 48 hours to get away from town. His time is up and look out we are going to have little hell here in a few hours if he don’t skip. He went to Marshall Sunday after a lawyer to defend him against the mob. The mob notified his lawyer to come to Miami if he wanted to. If he did they would put him in the river but he failed to come. John R. Atwater Civil War Document

Civil War document written, August 13, 1863 the camp of the 15th Connecticut Voluteer Regiment was located at Portsmouth, Virginia. The purpose of the document was to make an installment payment of 10 dollars due to John R. Atwater on a bounty of a $100.00 that was promised him from the state of Connecticut as an incentive to enlist in company 'K' of the 15th Connecticut volunteer regiment. The voucher is signed by Atwater and his commanding officer Henry H. Stiles.
