125 Handwritten Letters and Documents Forsyth Willett Bruen

Most of these paper items have to do with the Forsythe, Craig and Bruen families of Newport Rhode Island. There are about 125 pieces in the lot and they dates from the 1860’s into the early 1900’s. Most of the ephemera has to do with Russell Forsyth. Then a good share of the ephemera also has to do with Russell’s sister, Emily Howe Forsyth Bruen. Out of the 125 pieces there are 50 letters, mostly handwritten and most are of the personal nature, 25 receipts, 23 deeds or legal papers, 2 wills (Russell’s and Emily’s) and 26 miscellaneous pieces.

Colonial Rhode Island documents. One document dated 1748 appears to be a promissory note in the amount of 8 pounds. Danial Howland of Portsmouth was given credit by the Trustees of the Colony of Rhode Island. The other document dated 1766 is a summons for Thomas Gorton of West warwick to appear at court in East Greenwich.

Deed dated at Providence, November 19, 1796.

Blank on verso but for docket and notation regarding it being recorded a few months later, and signed by the Town Clerk.

The document itself is signed by Henry Olney and his wife Phoebe, and witnessed by Stephen Hopkins, and George Tillinghast.

This is an agreement betweeen "Henry Olney of Providence...Mariner...and Zachariah Allen...Merchant..." for a certain "Triangular piece of Land situated in the northerly part of said Providence on the Plain (so called) containing three acres and three quarters of an acre and nineteen Rods, bounded northerly and southerly on Highways... and Westerly on a Lot of Land belonging to Ann Rodman & Elizabeth Olney...."

And a few more lines, with a quit-claim handwritten note at the bottom of the document, "And Phebe Olney, Wife of the said Henry, for the same Consideration above expressed do hereby...release and forever quit-claim unto the said Zachariah Allen...."
